A multi-dimensional problem, such as co-occurring mental distress and substance use, requires a multi-disciplinary solution. Over the past 25 years First Step has proven itself to be up to the challenge.
That is why, in our new location, First Step will establish itself as a Centre for Excellence in multi-disciplinary team care for people with co-occurring needs, including drug use.
The Centre will have four primary pillars:
1. Integrated, compassionate care
As a Centre for Excellence, we will continue to set the standard for integrated, compassionate care in Australia for our client population, offering a holistic approach that addresses the full spectrum of needs faced by some of the most vulnerable members of our community, all in a fit-for-purpose facility.
2. Research and evaluation
First Step Legal is completing its independent evaluation by Melbourne University, and First Step more broadly is undertaking a 2-year impact evaluation by Turning Point (Monash University). This is critical in ensuring that the services we provide are not only effective but are continually improving based on evidence and best practice. By grounding our approach in rigorous research, we remain an influential force for integrated care in the Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs sectors.
3. Training and workforce development
First Step is already a training hub for doctors (opiate replacement therapy) and lawyers. As a Centre for Excellence, we will expand this aspect of our work, both as a standalone organisation and in partnership. Training at First Step will provide education in specific disciplines, but also in multi-disciplinary teams and integrated care. This prepares individual practitioners to think beyond the traditional silos of care by embracing a more holistic, team-based approach, and to become change champions within their own organisations.
4. Advocacy
The Centre for Excellence will also serve as a blueprint for integrated care models across Australia. As the healthcare and legal sectors face increasing demand for holistic, person-centred approaches, First Step will offer a scalable and replicable model of care.
By advocating for change and sharing our model, evaluation data and research with stakeholders (including government, other healthcare providers, and the public), First Step can lead the charge in transforming the Mental Health and AOD sectors. We can help create organisations that address the intersecting issues of substance use, mental health, and legal difficulties in an evidence and values-based, and effective, way. Whilst always improving our model of care, First Step will demonstrate with increasing evidence that this model is transformational in fostering healthier, more resilient and better connected communities.
