Here are some questions we've been frequently asked about the move:
Why is First Step moving to Mitford Street?
First Step is moving to Mitford Street due to the increasing demand for our services and the need for more space. With the sale of 39 Greeves Street by our landlords, we face a “perfect storm” of challenges, including accommodating our growing staff and programs. The move to Mitford Street provides an opportunity to expand our services and create a Centre for Excellence in multi-disciplinary team care for people with co-occurring needs, including drug use.
How will the move affect the services First Step provides?
The move to Mitford Street will enhance the services we provide. The new facility will give us the space and infrastructure to expand our programs, improve collaboration between teams, and provide better care for our clients. There will be no reduction in services, and almost no disruption in services during the transition.
Will the location be accessible for clients?
Yes, Mitford Street is in a central location in St Kilda, and we have carefully chosen it for its accessibility to public transport and the community we serve. The new facility is designed with accessibility in mind to ensure it meets the needs of all our clients. Click here to see the map.
How are you paying for the move?
First Step has undertaken an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise $650,000. This funding will go towards the cost of the renovation, fit-for-purpose fit-out and equipment to ensure the new facility meets the needs of our programs and services for the next 10 years. If you would like to contribute, you can make a donation here.
When will the move take place?
We are planning to open at Mitford Street on Thursday 2nd January. We will keep our community updated over the next few weeks on our website, socials and via email.
Will First Step’s mission or focus change with the move?
No, First Step’s mission remains the same: to ensure people seeking support for alcohol and other drug use, mental distress or legal needs get the help they want and need in a welcoming, hope-filled environment. The move will enable us to enhance our services and better meet the needs of the community.
How will this move benefit the community?
With increasing work in education, research and advocacy, the new Centre for Excellence will positively influence the future of healthcare and social support across the country.
What steps is First Step taking to ensure a smooth transition?
We are working closely with staff, clients, and stakeholders to ensure a seamless move to the new location. There will be no interruption in services during the transition, and we are committed to making the move as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
