We would like to introduce you to First Step’s newest Board Member, Dr Gyu Lee.

Gyu wears a lot of hats – he is a Psychiatry Registrar at Monash Health, and a Harm Reduction Practitioner at the Medically Supervised Injecting Room in Richmond and also at Bunjilwarra Koori Youth Alcohol and Drug Healing Service.

He started off his journey in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector working at the Adult, Mother and Baby Withdrawal Unit and then becoming the first Harm Reduction Practitioner for Windana. He has worked at the Victorian Department of Health (Mental Health & Wellbeing Division) as a policy officer for the AOD Strategy Unit and has a Masters of Public Health.

Gyu’s passion is in mental health and AOD recovery because he is also in recovery himself. Having experienced the stigma, shame and discrimination in the health system, as well as wider society, he is an advocate for people with lived and living experience of mental health, AOD and trauma.

As First Step’s first Board member with lived and living experience, he hopes to provide a voice for those who are at the centre of our work – our clients.
