First Step congratulates existing Board member Catherine Easton on her appointment as the new Chair of First Step.
After 12 years of dedicated service on the Board, including 7 years as Chair, Mark Watt is stepping down, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of leadership and commitment.
Mark’s tenure spans a period of significant growth and transformation at First Step, including navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, new partnerships in the not-for-profit sector and new partnership opportunities with government. Throughout this time, Mark has been a steadfast advocate for the organisation, providing unwavering support to the CEO while upholding the highest standards of governance.
Known and respected across the First Step and broader not-for-profit community, Mark has been approachable, encouraging, and enthusiastic to celebrate the organisation’s many achievements. His recognition and promotion of the tireless efforts of our staff has made a lasting impact on the culture of First Step. While we are sad to see Mark leave, we are deeply grateful for his contributions and proud to celebrate his outstanding service. We wish him every success as he continues his important work in the not-for-profit sector, including in his role as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia.
Catherine joined the Board in October 2022 and during this time has proven herself an invaluable Board member with a passion for the wellbeing of people living with mental distress and people who use drugs, while bringing her extensive experience and collaborative approach to bear in upholding governance standards.
Catherine has over 18 years board experience, having previously served as Chair of Linden New Art and Arts Project Australia and as a member of the Palais Theatre Community Fund Committee. Catherine currently holds positions on the Policy and Planning Committee at Arts Project and as a Board Director of You Matter (Aus) Ltd. In addition to her governance roles, Catherine has held executive positions in both the commercial and for-purpose sectors, focusing on service delivery and organisational transformation.
Catherine is joined by existing Board member Marius Smith, CEO of VACRO, as Deputy Chair.
