Reset FAQs

Are any groups offered online?

Yes. The Family & Friends Group is available online on Tuesday evenings (5:00–6:30pm). All other groups are in person.

How big are the groups?

Group size varies due to our rolling intake. Groups can range from 2–20 people. We will split groups to keep them smaller and more comfortable when needed.

Is there homework?

There’s no formal homework. If you’d like to repeat or practise any handout activities at home, we can provide extra copies. Your program folder stays at First Step.

Is the program free?

Yes. ResetLife at First Step is fully funded by the Australian Government through SEMPHN.

Do I need to be abstinent before joining?

Participants must complete a withdrawal period, if they have not already done so, before entering the program and are expected to maintain abstinence throughout participation.

What happens if someone has a lapse?

Lapses can happen. We support participants to understand what happened, learn from it and plan next steps.

Participants pause group sessions for one week after use but can continue individual sessions during that time.

Will I be discharged if I have a positive drug screen?

No. A positive screen is treated as a learning opportunity, not grounds for discharge. The only requirement is a brief pause from groups until a week has passed since last use.

Can I do the program more than once?

Yes. Some people choose to repeat the program later on. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Speak to the team if you’re interested.

Can people on opioid replacement therapy join?

Yes. People receiving support from medical practitioners (including opioid replacement therapy) are welcome.

Can I involve family or supports?

Yes. To keep the Family & Friends group safe and supportive, we work with you to choose who to involve and explain the aims of the group to them. Usually participants come to their first session on their own and then invite their support person once they’re comfortable.
