The Peer Support Coordinator will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. You will work directly with the primary therapist who will act as mentor for your ongoing development. You will have the opportunity to co-lead program elements like Early Recovery Skills and Relapse Prevention groups. It is our aim that you will have the opportunity to build on your existing skills doing such things as facilitating topics in smaller groups where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
The Peer Support Coordinator will be part of a team and will be supported to co-lead Early Recovery Skills and Relapse Prevention groups. The focus of this role will include:
- Role modelling recovery attitudes and behaviours
- Providing a safe, familiar, less-structured group experience in which clients can begin to practice re-socialisation skills
- Encouraging clients to continue to broaden their support systems of abstinent, and recovering associates
- Attending briefing meetings with the primary therapist prior to Early Recovery Skills and Relapse Prevention groups
- Actively engaging with clients to build cohesive relationships
- Providing treatment that is welcoming, empathic and optimistic and ensure, where possible, the reduction of stigma and shame for people and their families experiencing complex alcohol and other drug use
- Welcoming and learning from mentoring of primary therapist
- Providing clients with up-to-date details of Twelve Step and SMART Recovery meetings
- Using lived experience openly, appropriately and effectively to build therapeutic relationships
Key Selection Criteria
- Outline your experience (lived or other) in AOD and/or any training you may have completed or be in the process of completing
- Describe any experience you may have working with clients within a group context
- Briefly Compare and contrast your values with those of First Step (as you understand them to be)
- Describe your willingness and ability to follow a prescribed treatment program while treating all individuals with dignity and compassion
- Outline your recent or ongoing professional development goals
Essential Requirements - QUALIFICATIONS:
- No minimum qualifications required; however, a Cert IV AOD is desired
Skills and Experience
- Ability to work as a member of an alcohol and other drugs therapeutic treatment team
- Understanding of recovery principles
- Commitment to working with clients within a group context
- Demonstrated ability to separate and contain personal experience as a consumer from that of clients
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to
consult, liaise and work collaboratively with colleagues

Children Check and be prepared to undergo a National Criminal History Check prior to
commencement
Terms:
**Initially this role is offered on a part time contract basis EFT 0.6 until end of June 2023
and ongoing is subject to continued federal funding.
